Devon is a talented basketball player, but he knows something more. Why do you think he has to sneak to the library and lie about the destination? Do you think we put people in categories? Why do you think this happens?
We can all say that we are people who don't judge or something like that, but we are lying to ourselves. Yes, some people may not label, but they still judge some things. We are all humans and if we had no opinions, something must be wrong. Devon is a victim of judgment. People have it in their head that he is meant for basketball, people can't see a basketball player reading poetry. I don't think he can come out of his comfort zone and actually be himself, "himself" got lost somewhere in the opinions of others, and sadly that happens to more people than Devon.

I think Devon has to sneak around because he is scared of what his friends will think of him. He is expected to be a typical jock as people would say. He is expected to push away school work & not like readinq even thouqh he enjoys it. I think we do put people in caterqories. Why, I really don't know. I mean does anybody really know why we label anyone. Sometimes we do but other times I don't even know. Its probably because it's how we expect them to be. It's just the " way of life" as some people miqht put it. But I am qlad that later on he opens up and doesnt feel like he has to hide behind a shell.
In life, it is always hard to be your true self. Even as you get older and more comfortable with yourself, there will be things about yourself that you might want to keep hidden from others. Devon seems to be trying to be his true self in front of others despite their opinions, ridicule, etc. I think that all people label others even when they don't mean to. I find that people think about me one way and then see me completely differently when they see my fiance. Does dating someone different than me really change who I am? Or someone will find out I am a teacher and automatically assume that I am prim and proper? Is that really the case? I think that we have to learn to be who we truly are and accept that person and then maybe we can begin to accept others for who they truly are.

DEVON LIES ABOUT HIS DESTINATION BECAUSE PEOPLE WOULD MAKE FUN OF HIM BECAUSE HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE COOL BASKETBALL PLAYER. In the middle of the book, he starts to gain confidence, and when one of his basketball teammates points out the poetry books, Devon finally acknowledges that they are his. Devon had been categorized as a jock by most, if not all of his peers. People put labels on others based solely on physical appearance and other surface characteristics. When the other students saw that Devon was really really good at playing basketball, they assumed that that was all he could do. If they knew him better and were closer to him, they might change which category they would put him in. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to be close with everyone.

Devon is worried about what the students will think of him.His friends wont understand why he does what he does and might think different of him.They are used to knowing him for basketball and his talent but if they see him reading they will think he is crazy.

I think the reason why he has to lie about his destination is because society won't accept for who he his. I think we do put people in categories or "cliques" because that is what we think of them. Devon is classified as a jock because that is what his peers know him more as.

Devon doesnt want his friends to know that he does like to read because it will mess up his reputation as being a "jock" or a athlete. yes, we do put people in categores especially teens like some are in the popular group some are in the not so popular group[nerds!]

I think Devon has to sneak to the library because he a basketball player and if he tells everbody he likes to read they will think of him less and as a nerd
ReplyDeleteI think that Devon probably does it because he doesn't want his teamates to think of him as a nerd so he hides behind his skills but i think he should just accept who he is
